Saturday, 7 November 2019
Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad (KLK) announced its sponsorship of World rank No.7 Badminton Mixed Doubles athletes, Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying.
The sponsorship is in line with its corporate responsibility effort to promote a harmonious culture through sports as well as to support the nation’s pursuit for global sports excellence. It is hoped that the Rio silver medalists duo will continue to bring all Malaysians together and make the country proud when chasing their Tokyo Olympics dream.
KLK executive director Lee Jia Zhang said in a statement, “We understand that the COVID-19 pandemic has changed many of our lives. We are humbled to be able to help ease the financial woes of our Malaysian Mixed Doubles players during this difficult period. We hope that with our sponsorship, Peng Soon-Liu Ying can focus and be better prepared for the Games.”
The Tokyo Olympics was deferred for one-year until July 23 – Aug 8 in 2021 due to the pandemic. Although Peng Soon-Liu Ying had forgo the two Denmark Opens in October 2020, they are planning to make a return early next year for the two BWF Opens in Asia. The world No. 7 duo will need to stay within the top 16 until next year to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics 2021.

Chan Peng Soon has expressed his gratitude to KLK for the support given to Goh Liu Ying and him. “The deferment of this year’s Olympics also meant that we will need to continue training to maintain our physical form for another 12 months, in which this will require extra financial expenses. Thank you KLK for coming forward to support us during this difficult time as it is not easy to find support and sponsorship during the COVID-19 pandemic”, said Chan.
“The money will help us cover the travel expenses for our future tournaments. We can now focus on qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics and hopefully achieve a better result for Malaysia”, said Liu Ying.
Since turning pro as independent players, Peng Soon-Liu Ying has done well by winning the 2019 Thailand Masters and New Zealand Open.
The announcement also sees Peng Soon-Liu Ying become the first brand ambassadors for KLK’s DavosLife E3 Complete, a natural Vitamin E dietary supplement comprising Tocotrienols and alpha-tocopherol derived from palm fruits.
